Does what we eat really affect our output and wellbeing?

It is well understood that our diets affect our weight and risk of developing diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer. But emerging research also points to a strong association between what we eat and our focus and concentration, our body's response to stress, and our mood and mental health.

Observational studies have found that:

  • Diets composed of a high consumption of fruit and veg, regular consumption of wholegrains and fish and moderate consumption of unprocessed red meat (i.e. Mediterranean diets) are associated with better mental health and reduced likelihood of developing symptoms of mood disorders such as anxiety and depression (reference), plus lower perceived stress (reference).

Experimental studies have demonstrated that:

  • Amongst patients with depression, just 12 weeks of adhering to a Mediterranean diet complete with fish oil can improve quality of life and reduce depressive symptoms (reference).

  • Increasing fruit and veg consumption from none or very little to around 3 or 4 portions per day can improve vitality and motivation in just 14 days (reference), and swapping one's daily snack of crisps or chocolate/sweets for a piece of fruit can reduce anxiety and fatigue in as little as 10 days (reference).

  • In patients with severe depression, consuming 25ml of extra virgin olive oil per day can reduce depressive symptoms (reference).

  • Consuming a high glycemic load diet (i.e. white carbs and sweet foods) can lead to depressive symptoms, mood disturbances, and fatigue whereas a low glycemic load diet is not associated with these symptoms (reference).

  • Psychobiotic diets (those high in prebiotic and fermented foods) can reduce feelings of perceived stress (reference).
